To say that hit points are literally you getting hit in your body would be weird since at much higher levels you could take several arrows, a huge chunk ripped out by an oversized worm, and even the direct fire from a disintegrate spell while still operating the exact same as before. These hit points represent their physical well-being and the likelihood of them having to find another character to parade about as. Some games limit how much characters get back after resting, but offer other ways to heal like having someone throw a bandage on your gaping wound from being ripped open by a dinosaur with wings or almost having your soul pulled out by a shadow. It can be a bit weird when they are reduced to 1 hit point at the end of the day, go to bed, and wake up completely refreshed with no signs of yesterday’s wounds. What does it mean that a fighter has 20 hit points while a wizard has 6? When do we start taking hit point damage? When we get a cat scratch? A cleaver cuts off a finger? A fireball blossoms and singes off our eyebrows?įor the players, understanding hit points are simply how well they are doing in the game. Probably the most commonly argued abstraction one can think of is hit points. The purpose of abstractions in any game is to translate the world of fiction to our reality, and occasionally, you have to accept the strange warts that come with it. Why does a cat deal 1 piercing damage when a commoner only has 4 hit points? Does this mean that the world that the party lives in is especially vulnerable to death by cats? The very essence of the world is translated to them through these abstractions, and so it’s no surprise that many of them are argued over and challenged constantly. They move through the world only experiencing what they are told and using set rules to do so. But how does this impact your world, your table, and the players who go about stomping across it? Playing in a World of Abstractionsįor the players, the abstractions made by rules are how they interact with the world. There are a ton of abstractions in a game, some might leave you scratching your head while others might even make some logical sense to you. You are a powerful swordsman and every time you attack, you somehow always miss 5% of the time no matter what you do. Or perhaps you’ve blown all your 1st-level spell slots and can no longer conjure the power to cast more… except you still have a 9th-level spell slot to go. Your hit points are not meat points… but then again, you are still hit for damage and grappled by a T-Rex but it’s all about how much stamina you have and you didn’t take wounds. If you want a quick look at all the new features of PvZA, I suggest you take a peek at Crazy Dave’s Garden. No matter where you look in a game, there are going to be abstractions and hand-waved topics. Of course, I must say that the game is no walk in the park I’ve had my brain eaten a couple times already. Overall, I have a very positive first impression of Plants vs Zombies Adventures and think that PopCap did a great job keeping the original essence of the game alive while incorporating new elements to appeal to both old and new audiences.

Zombucks are used to purchase things for your town, Coins are used to grow plants, Gems are used to speed up the process of building and growing, and Sun are used to install plants to defend your house as usual. There are 4 types of currency: Zombucks, Coins, Gems, and Sun. The storyline is still humorous and comes with those silly notes that the zombies like to leave at your doorstep.Īnother noteable difference is the fact that you now build towns and you must grow the plants you will use on your adventure in town. Similar to many other Facebook platform games, PvZA has the boardgame-like approach where players must complete a sequence of stages in order to move on in the adventure. PvZA has a “painted” 3D look whereas the original PvZ was flat but built with bright pixels. The most noticeable difference between PvZA and the original PvZ is the graphic style.

I tried to limit my gameplay of PvZA for fear of being sucked into the black hole of addiction, but here is my first impression. The goal is still the same: you use adorable plants to fight off zombies who are trying to break into your house to eat your brain.

I appreciate how PvZA managed to maintain the quirky flavor of the game while adding in new elements. Like many other PvZ fans, I waited for this day in eagerness and am not the least bit disappointed. Today was the beta launch of Plants vs Zombies Adventures by PopCap.
